Taking on fresh provisions was vital to the wellbeing of crews making the eight-month, one-way journey to and from Asia, with scurvy and other diseases claiming many lives. The meat is very short-grained and tastes good, which serves us very well in this time of shortage.” And a day later, “our skiff returned from the Robben Island with 200 birds, mostly penguins, as well as 800 eggs.”ĭespite the hardships, Jansz was able to recognise the potential of the Cape as a victualling station for Dutch ships – he just had to convince the Lords Seventeen (the VOC’s “board of directors”), who were notoriously stingy, according to Groenewald, to establish a permanent settlement there. On Saturday, 15 June, “the crew shot a rhinoceros (which had been fighting with an elephant) near our fortification. This excerpt from Jansz’s journal gives an idea of the kind of challenges and successes the men experienced. (The island is now a popular tourist attraction with a museum, where visitors can learn all about the prison and see the resident penguins which are now an endangered species.) They even ventured to Robben Island – where Nelson Mandela languished in prison from 1964 to 1982 – in skiffs. They bartered livestock and fresh meat from the indigenous KhoeKhoe people and had great success fishing in the nearby Salt River. The journal provided Werz with great detail about the year the men spent at the Cape – including a few very useful clues as to the exact location of the wreck.Īfter the men had made it ashore in 1647 – transferring heavy cargo in the choppy conditions was an ordeal which spanned several weeks and claimed one life – they established a camp among the dunes which they called Zandenburch (“Sandcastle” in English). Through his research, he found a tranche of documents, including the journal kept the by the ship’s junior merchant, Leendert Jansz, who was one of the 62 men who had stayed in Cape Town after the wreck. Putting the disappointment behind him, he continued to investigate the Nieuw Haarlem “as a sort of hobby,” by walking on the beach “whenever was bored” and combing the state archives in the Hague and Cape Town for any information. “She took me to the beach and showed me some timbers,” said Werz, who instantly recognised them as coming from a much more recent 19th-Century wreck. It was a mystery that many serious historians had wanted to solve over the years, and previous attempts to find the wreck had all included many incorrect assumptions. The Haarlem – the ship that “started it all” – was at the top of his wish list. Werz had come to South Africa harbouring hopes of discovering the remains of the many VOC ships wrecked at the Cape. Within a few weeks of arriving, a member of the public phoned to say she thought she’d found the remains of the Nieuw Haarlem. Werz, who started his career as a marine archaeologist in the Netherlands, moved to South Africa in 1988 to take up a lecturing position at the University of Cape Town. The French continued to call at Saldanha Bay from time to time but also had their own colony in Reunion.” After 1652, according to Groenewald, “the English started to concentrate more on St Helena as a halfway station. But the experience of the Nieuw Haarlem survivors was the “catalyst” that determined which of the powers would be the first to settle in the region and where precisely they would settle.

Music is standard dramatic military movie issue but I didn't dislike it. Build up your towers to combat the tanks before they get out of the box and make a huge mess in the room. The screen does look just a little blurry, but I didn't think it was a problem. I didn't find any problems with jerky cursor movement, unlike another reviewer. There could be a little more distinguishing information about exactly what type of tanks or planes are set to come out in each level or wave, The game keeps track of how well you did each level based on how many tanks or planes you let through. I found the interface to be really clear in describing exactly how much time, how many lives, how many waves, how much money, etc. Although this game is about towers defending against tanks and airplanes (at least throughout the demo), a pretty standard scenario, unusually, it is set in a cardboard box in someone's room, and, it's 3D, unlike any other tower defender game I've seen, which for me, isn't that many. MP allows up to 6 search terms which can be combined separately as and/or. Neofinder’s search seems very limited compared to Iview’s (now Media Pro). Unfortunately cataloguing and fun still don’t go together but it has become far less of a chore. If it’s good then I’ll use it but if I think that NeoFinder is superior then I’ll upgrade to one of the multi-user business license options. I am now waiting to see what form the Photo Mechanic catalogue takes when it appears. There are probably loads more options to this application than I have thought about yet and so I look forward to playing with it some more and finding new things to do with it. The idea is that I have a full set of JPEG edited files on a cloud server which I can identify by file name having searched on the iPhone or iPad and get them to where they need to go that way. Quite how often I’ll need this isn’t obvious but it is something that the application supports and so I’ve added it to my photo apps folder on the phone. I have also bought the iOS app which allows me to keep a copy of the catalogue on my iPhone and iPad ready to search for images when I’m not in the office and when I don’t have a computer to hand. So, for now, I have a new catalogue application that does the job well with no fuss. The great news is that it is fully 64bit and so it should be compatible with the next version of the Mac OS The interface isn’t pretty but it is familiar and it does a decent job. To get that you have to pay US$149.90 + sales tax for the business edition, which also offers extra functionality. This basic version isn’t perfect: it doesn’t automatically update when you add new images for example. I kept trying to trip it up – going for searches that I knew other applications had struggled with and it passed every test I threw at it. Two days later I paid US$39.99 + sales taxes for the Mac Private License and I created a catalogue for my main 5TB external USB drive overnight. The developers even offer a “sidegrade” discount for people making this transition. Moving from Media Pro to NeoFinder was a doddle. The question popped into my head “why keep trying to make Media Pro work when this is available?” All of my pictures have their metadata intact and I have tried hard over the years to get my captions and keywords as good as I can make them. I made a quick catalogue from about 20,000 old images and I was shocked by how easy it was to use and how good the searches it allowed were. They offer a free trial and I had some time on my hands and so I downloaded and installed it. I thought to myself “how come I have never heard of it?” A quick search on the web brought up their site and I realised that this was a newer name for the old CD Finder application that I tried and quite liked half a dozen years or more ago. Camera Bits have been saying for years that “it is coming” but I have decided to look around for other options.Ī few months ago I was reading a thread on a Facebook photographers’ group that mentioned NeoFinder. Phase One’s decision to stop supporting it has made me look around for an alternative.īeing a long-time fan of Photo Mechanic I have been holding out and waiting for them to bring out a new version of the application that forms the core of my workflow with a cataloguing function. I have had Media Pro in its various forms for a very long time now and it has served me well. The idea of having an application that does so much and that is effectively free (as I subscribe to Photoshop CC anyway) is a good one but every time I have given it a go, I have decided that it isn’t as convenient at Media Pro as a catalogue. Well that’s not entirely true every time I look at Lightroom one of the things that attracts me to it is the cataloguing function that it brings with it. Cataloguing my archive is definitely something that I haven’t given enough thought to. Like most photographers my workflow has developed over the years and there are some bits of it that are more to do with convenience and habit than they are to do with efficiency. Another configuration in which the PMs in the inner rotor are tangentially magnetized was proposed by Rasmussen et al. Incorporating the concept of the Halbach PM array and the concept of the magnetic gear, Jian and Chau proposed an improved coaxial Halbach magnetic gear as shown in Figure 4. The key characteristic of this con- figuration is that all PMs are involved in the torque transmission at the same time, hence obtaining a high torque density with 50-150 kNm/m 3. As shown in Figure 3, the fer- romagnetic pole-poles which are sandwiched between the outer rotor and the inner rotor take the charge of modulating the magnetic fields both in inner airgap and outer airgap. In 2001, Howe and Atallah proposed an innovative coaxial magnetic gear with high torque density. Although the topology of parallel-axis magnetic gears is very simple, they have not been widely used for industrial application because of their very low torque density. In order to avoid the complicated structure of mag- netic worm and skew gears, Ikuta proposed the sim- ple parallel-axis magnetic gears which include two basic topologies: radial coupling and axial coupling as shown in Figure 2. However, both of them have the demerits of complexity and poor torque density. In 19, the magnetic worm gear and magnetic skew gear was also developed, respectively. In 1987, Tsurumoto and Kikuchi proposed a new transmission type using an involute SmCo magnetic gear which was shown in Figure 1. Until the emergence of high-energy rare-earth PMs, magnetic gears aroused great interests from researchers. But it also suffers from the low-energy of ferrite used. In 1941, Faus proposed another magnetic gear topol- ogy similar to the traditional mechanical spur gear. However, it attracted no attention at that time for its low efficiency and complicated structure. The basic concept of the magnetic gear can be tracked down to the beginning of the 20th century when a US patent described a device consisting of two rotational shafts with salient electromagnets on their rims. At last, a conclusion will be drawn in Section 5. Section 4 will discuss the application of magnetic gears for EVs. In Section 3, based on the same structure, the magnetic gears installed with Alnico, NdFeB and SmCo PM materials will be analyzed and compared. In Section 2 a comprehensive review of magnetic gears will be conducted. This paper presents the development of magnetic gears, with emphasis on the comparison between the non-rare-earth and rare-earth magnetic gears. Although the rare- earth magnetic gears have better performance, their fluctuant and expensive price and finite reserves will increase the cost of EVs manufacture, hindering fur- ther application in EVs. Recently there is an increasing concern on the price and supply of rare-earth elements. After the advent of high-energy rare-earth PM materials such as the neodymium-iron-born (NdFeB) PM and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) PM, they become the PM materials widely adopted for magnetic gears. Before the invention of rare-earth PMs, alumin- ium-nickel-cobalt (Alnico) which takes the definite merits of high remnant flux density and abundant elements is also used to develop magnetic gears. Ferrite has the advantages of low price, easy manufacture and high coercivity, whereas low remnant flux density is its obvious de- merit. The first PM material applying to the magnetic gear is non-rare-earth ferrite which can only transmit low torque. Magnetic gears offers the merits of physical isolation, silent operation, maintenance free and inher- ent overload protection. It is well known that these characteristics made the replacement of mechanical gears by magnetic gears possible. Obviously the advent of the magnetic gear attributes to the application of permanent magnet (PM) materi- als which can produce a persistent flux and magnetic force and realize contactless torque transmission. However, they suffer from some inherent drawbacks, such as the wear-and-tear, contact friction, annoying noise and regular maintenance. With the help of the mechanical gears and gearboxes, torque and speed can be amplified for various practical applications, such as amplifying the speed (reducing the torque) and amplifying the torque (reducing the speed) to satisfy different driving requirements and road conditions. gears and gearboxes play vital important roles in electric vehicles (EVs). Amazing for when your opponent launches a heavy attack on one of your buildings and you need extra troops to defend it. Recovers 80%-100% of units that were killed in the last 5 seconds in the selected building. Small note, but if you are experienced, you can stop your opponent from changing a level 2 or higher buildings into a forge with the skill as well, which can cripple an upcoming attack. You can either try and spam this skill to gain a unit lead, or save up for different abilities later on, whichever fits your playstyle more. Experiment and choose the strategy which suits your game play best. Using this skill at this point will stop the conversion and means your opponent will have spent 30 troops for nothing. Try to keep an eye on your opponent’s upgrades – if you notice that they spent 30 units then that’s not an upgrade but a conversion. If you choose instead to focus on a weaker player then a stronger opponent can quickly gain an overwhelming advantage by capturing their buildings. Just be careful when making your choice – an experienced player might withstand a long-distance attack before counter attacking in turn. Try to use it when they are on the verge of upgrading a building from level 3 to level 4 – it will drop to level 2! On September 13th, 2017 the game saw further announcements for all editions of the game: an upcoming single-player expansion titled "Don't Starve: Hamlet" focused on the origins of the Pigmen content updates for Shipwrecked and a series of events for Don't Starve Together starting with "The Forge." More information on these announcements can be found here. Its theme was mostly about nautism and navigation, allowing the player to build and use boats to navigate on the waters. Shipwrecked was fully released on March 31st, 2016. July 30th, 2015 was the day that Don't Starve: Shipwrecked was revealed to the public, co-created by Capy Games. DST, with its popularity long since out-growing the original title, has continued to receive major updates in the form of characters, seasonal events, qol, and content changes. Later, another series of updates known as "Return of Them" started in 2019, which added seafaring, fishing and farming reworks and a collection of "Moon" based features. Initially it was just the original with multiplayer and all enemy health increased to compensate, but Don't Starve Together has subsequently received multiple updates, collectively referred to as "A New Reign," that have made it increasingly different from single-player. Don't Starve Together was officially released on April 21st, 2016. The closed beta was released the next Summer and Early Access was released on December 15, 2014.
